Baby Steps Reflection #3

My "Baby Steps" resource is completed now, with the third section on aleatoric elements and chance composition.

By using an online dice, students randomly select an order of notes (taken from their chosen pitch set) to use as the foundation for their melodic material. Students can use this process in any way that they want either as a once off or as a key part of their composition process.

The activity is fully scaffolded through a worksheet and an example. Students are given a way to start but still hold control over their own work through the second half of the section by adding note values and articulation to their melodic content.

By including excerpts from an interview with Bree van Reyk throughout my resource, students can see how a professional musician composes and how she works through decision making and experiments with ideas in the composition process.

Hopefully my resource helps students to relax and enjoy composing and it becomes a more safe and fun experience as they experiment and make unique musical material.
