Digital life in 2018

Updated: Nov 4, 2018

The end is near.... and what a semester it has been!

Yesterday at the SCM we reviewed the content explored over this past semester in our last lecture for "Technology in Music Education". We discussed what it means to be in a digital age in the classroom and how as future educators can we create inclusive and engaging material for children in the 21st Century.

Schools need to acknowledge the difference between disruptive and positive technologies. Currently there is a gap between the way that kids learn in and outside school. Learning through technology empowers kids to learn at their own pace and learn material that is relevant to them. While acknowledging that this enables students to learn in engaging ways that caters for their individual needs, it is also important to understand how to introduce technology in the classroom that adds to student's learning in a positive way.

Technology also opens up an accessible way to encourage students to be creative.

Ken Robinson advocates for creative thinking through creativity in education and business sectors.

“Creativity is as important now in education as literacy and we should treat it with the same status.” ― Ken Robinson

Robinson became famous in 2006 with his Ted Talk "Do Schools Kill Creativity" and his life’s work has been based on the belief that schools can and should nurture creativity in kids through instruction that is personalized and customized for the communities where students live.

Creativity in the classroom is essential as it teaches children to embrace originality and to discover yourself. Students need the opportunity to explore, make mistakes and ultimately CREATE.

"Education should be about helping kids discover talents and interests that lie within them." ― Ken Robinson, The Washington Post, 2015

These past few weeks, SCM students have been exploring various technology that facilitates for creativity in the music classroom, hopefully we can all continue to explore and include it in our future classrooms.

Now, although this was the last lecture for TME it is not the end yet!

Stay tuned for the presentation of all of our projects!
