Mobile video studio

Today at the Conservatorium of Music a bunch of Music Ed students set to work, to set up a Mobile Video Studio in the classroom. In groups of approximately 6 students, we worked through a very methodical and extensive set of instructions created by the one and only James Humberstone. To our delight, within the hour and a half mark, the system was all plugged in, audio levels checked and lighting installed.

We discussed various ways to check the various pieces of equipment, including the

magical powers of a single clap.

Did you know that a clap is the easiest and most reliable way to check the audio levels on your video recorder/microphone? It helps to check that the video and audio are synchronised and this is especially useful if you are using more than one camera.

Before you start recording, a clap can help to check the levels of the microphones in your set up. You can see the peak of the sound and check to see if the levels are too high or too low. During the editing process you can use the clap (or a clapperboard like film crews do on a movie set) to mark the start of scenes and so that you can clearly see the start mark in the editing program.

Here is a short video that further explains the importance of the clap.

Who knew a clap could be so helpful!
