Notation Technology

Music notation technology is a key resource in classroom music education. It should enhance the musical experience of students rather than limit their learning. It must be accessible to students of all skill levels and be flexible for various genres and styles of composition.

Andrew, R. Brown (2007, p. 62) states that "as a composition tool, music publishing systems are becoming widespread for reasons of neatness and efficiencies." However notation is an

abstract representation of the ideas and sounds of music and as a result the choice of program used in the classroom will depend on the skill set of each student and the type of composition task being completed (Brown, 2007).

Some available programs include:

- Sibelius

- Finale

- Musescore - free software

- Dorico

- Notateme - App for ios and Android

As a music educator, it is important to be able to create relevant and modern resources for our students. Being able to create worksheets that utilise both graphic and traditional staff notation is a key way to help students transfer their practical knowledge and experience to developing their skills of recording their own musical ideas. Brown (2007) acknowledges some of the unique challenges educators may face in creating their own resources but also states that understanding the strengths of each program and taking advantages of specific shortcuts will help.

The moral of this story is to take the time to explore each program and try new things and encourage your students to do the same!
