Resource Reflection #3

Today I worked on the third week of my unit and resources for those lessons. This week the focus is on different ways of composing music inspired by Aleatoric music.

The first resource is a score reading worksheet on "Light for the first time" by Bree van Reyk. I tried to find interesting things about the composition itself as well as the way she has approached notation. Some of the things I have included as questions are: the importance of texture, box notation, stylistic indications and the extensive performance suggestions. Hopefully, this activity will enable students to think about the various ways music can be notated and the effect it has on the performance of the music.

The second activity is a class composition using Aleatoric methods and will be facilitated through class discussion and does not need any specific resources pre-made.

However, the week concludes with an extended response on Reyk's work. The response will be planned as a class and students will write it on their own and submit on their blog to be marked.

The question I decided to set was: "How does the score for “Light for the First Time” give freedom to the performer and how does the score facilitate that freedom while ensuring that performers remain loyal to the composition?"

I think it is an interesting thing to consider especially as 'freedom' for the performer is what Reyk was aiming for.
