Resource Reflection #5

I found the resources for the fifth week of the unit to be fun to make as they relate to extended techniques and how composers use them to further portray a story.

The first resource for this week is a score reading quiz. Students will guess what various notations mean. Here are some examples:

After students have had a go at guessing, the class will listen to the work and discuss what they hear and match it to what the score says. Some of these are hard to work out without knowing the piece or the context behind it, but i also think that some students would thrive off that challenge!

The next activity is a score reading sheet on "City Lights" and the extended techniques and stylistic indications it has in the score. This resource is similar to an earlier score reading activity but I think it is effective in breaking down aspects of the work.

The second lesson of this week features a comparative analysis of two vocal compositions. Students are given various things to comment on and then they can see how each piece is either similar or different. For example: "How does the composer use lyrics to portray the story". This resource was tricky to make without giving away the answers and I think the teacher will play an important role in this lesson to help students probe deeper into the analytical aspect of it.
